Drug dealer jailed for five years after driving at an officer

A drug dealer who drove at a police officer whilst trying to escape arrest has been jailed for five years.

Michael Davies, 24, of Poole Avenue, Orford, pleaded guilty at Liverpool Crown Court to possession of class B (cannabis) with intent to supply, dangerous driving, resisting arrest, assaulting a police constable, escaping lawful custody and common assault.

At 5.10pm on Wednesday 23 August two officers spotted Davies sitting in the passenger seat of a car on Central Way, Warrington. Davies was wanted for failing to appear for a court appearance at Liverpool Crown Court so officers attempted to arrest him.

When approaching the car Davies moved into the driver’s seat and then drove straight at an officer who had to jump out of the way. The car then drove off at speed and disappeared onto Winwick Street.

The next day officers went to a hotel on Aston Avenue, in Birchwood, to arrest Davies. At 12.20pm officers were waiting in the reception area of the hotel. When Davies came to check out officers went to arrest him and Davies attempted to flee. Officers used captor spray to detain him and he was arrested.

When he was arrested he was found with a black backpack with a quantity of cannabis in it with a street value of £560. After telling officers he had taken a large number of tablets he was taken to Warrington Hospital for a check-up.

Before entering the hospital he managed to pull away from the officer escorting him and ran off towards Lovely Lane. He barged a 63-year-old woman who was knocked to the floor during the foot chase before being detained again by officers providing back up. During this he shoulder barged an officer to the face.

PC Tom Bacon said: “Davies is a committed and violent criminal who has no regard for anyone but himself. He injured an innocent member of the public trying to escape from officers, attacked officers who were trying to arrest him and drove a car at another.

“Hopefully the sentence will be a deterrent to those who think they are above the law.”
