Police officer ‘attacked’ by man he was trying to arrest

A man suspected of drink driving reportedly assaulted a police officer as they tried to detain him.

At around 9.30pm on Sunday, February 21, police spotted a Ford Fiesta on Liverpool Road in Huyton, with no insurance.

The car failed to stop but officers managed to track it down a short time later on Calgarth Road.

A 28-year-old man, who was believed to be the driver, was arrested on suspicion of Section 18 wounding; drink driving; driving without insurance and failing to stop. He remains in custody.

The officer was taken to hospital with injuries to the face after the “despicable” attack.

Knowsley Community Policing Area Commander, Superintendent Jennifer Wilson said: “Violence against officers protecting our communities is absolutely despicable and we’re supporting our colleague after this attack.

“If you suspect that anyone you know is drink driving or driving otherwise illegally, tell us and we’ll do all we can to keep these dangers from the road.”
