Police dog sniffs out more than £1m of cannabis in lorry

A police dog sniffed out a haul of cannabis estimated to be worth more than £1m from a lorry in Dumfries and Galloway.

PD Gizmo joined officers while they searched a lorry at Cairnyan Main Terminal at 3am on Wednesday.

Police Scotland said the pup made a positive indication, and as a result, drugs believed to be cannabis were discovered in the vehicle.

The force said the narcotics found are estimated to have a street value of £1.1m.

The 46-year-old male driver was arrested and charged in connection with drug supply offences and appeared in court on Thursday.

A spokesperson for the force said: “Tackling illegal drugs and removing them from our communities is a priority for Police Scotland and part of that is targeting the transport routes used to courier drugs.

“We will continue to work to stop criminals bringing harm and misery to our communities.

“We rely on the support of the public to build intelligence on drug-related issues so that we can act on their concerns.

“We would urge anyone who is aware of any information about the supply of drugs to report the matter to police on 101, or anonymously through independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.“
